While The News Leader has only existed since 2000, it is the combination of two long-standing community newspapers, The Minerva Leader (63 years) and The Malvern Community News (80 years).
The Minerva Leader was founded on June 24, 1937, by Leonard Boerner, who would remain as editor and publisher until 1974. The Malvern Community News was founded in 1920 by William Arthur "Art" Lewis and had various owners and publishers.
In the 1950s, Boerner purchased The Malvern Community News. In 1974, Boerner sold both weeklies to the Alliance Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Dix Communications, which continues to own The News Leader today.
The News Leader serves the tri-county area of Stark, Carroll and Columbiana counties with a circulation of approximately 3,700 subscribers. The newspaper remains community oriented, focusing on the local news and events of the two communities and their surrounding areas.
